Goal of this exercise is improving

  • clear and distinct pronunciation,

  • musculature and movements of the organs of articulation.

Children learn that articulation movement is strongly controlled by the lip and mouth muscles and that intelligibility depends on active articulation movement of the mouth. Cork exercise promotes the ability to express language.

Instructions

Children prepare a short paragraph from a reading text.

Teacher:

Sit in pairs, looking at each other, very relaxed on the chair. One of each pair and put a pencil in your mouth, behind your canines. The bite should not be loosened or opened. Now read the prepared text to your partner.

When you've finished, read the same text in your best pronunciation. What do you notice? What does your partner discover?

Now switch roles and do the exercise again.

Variations

The same exercise can be done with a cork between the teeth. The effect is that the pronunciation becomes noticeably clearer and more polished.
