Goal of this exercise is improving

  • Reading comprehension

  • Functional reading skills

By visualizing the prosodic information (the "secret code") in texts, children can more easily interpret the functional stress patterns in the language of the texts.

Instructions

  1. The children choose individual reading texts.

  2. They use a highlighter to mark all capitalized words.

  3. Then they draw a line over the nouns with a red pen, indicating that the noun should be spoken louder, then the voice should drop slightly and make a tiny pause.

  4. They also mark the punctuation with the red pen.

  5. The children read the texts quietly and follow the markings.

As "readers", they present their texts to the group, paying attention to functionality, i.e. the communicative intentions conveyed by the sentence melody, individual stresses, speed when reading certain passages of text, high and low pitches, and pause placement.
